Eating and Chemotherapy

An introduction to how chemotherapy changes your dietary needs.

Cancer changes everything. In the event your cancer requires chemotherapy for the best outcome, you’ll find out that chemotherapy changes even more things. From your hair to your energy levels, chemotherapy can throw your life into turmoil. But the changes that occur from chemotherapy don’t stop there.

Every chemo treatment can also leave you with changing dietary needs and an unwilling stomach. What can you expect to happen with your diet when going through chemotherapy?

Not the Easy Path

As if simply going through cancer treatment weren’t tough enough, chemotherapy often causes you to experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, mouth sores, problems swallowing, and loss of appetite. On top of this list of issues, your taste buds will also probably undergo a transformation, transforming your once favorite foods into causes for vomiting.

With these difficult complications, eating can be a drag. In fact, it is common for patients going through chemotherapy to not want to eat at all. However, not eating the right amount of vital nutrients will make it more difficult for your body to recover from each chemotherapy treatment and move past whatever cancer you’re battling. Therefore it is vital that you work diligently to consume sufficient calories, vitamins, and nutrients.

Make It Count

Since eating after a round of chemotherapy can be difficult, it’s important that you make the most of every bite you take. In order to make sure you’re eating enough to keep your strength up, speak with your physician to find out how many calories you should be eating every day. Your doctor may even have a list of foods to eat, which will make your job a lot easier.

If not, it’ll be up to you to figure out what to eat. To make sure you get enough calories, write out a weekly menu well in advance. Then be sure to eat each and every thing on the menu. You may not feel up to eating it all, but treat your menu like a to-do list. Listing the foods you should eat will also keep you from consuming only junk foods that provide little help in the recovery process.

Spread Your Wings

Most people are creatures of habit. Unfortunately, if you’re going through chemotherapy, you’re going to have to set your lifelong eating habits to the side. Since some of your favorite foods of old will now be repulsive to you, this shouldn’t be difficult. But how can you put your old eating habits to rest and ensure you get plenty of healthy calories?

The first way to do this is to be open to new foods. Sure, you’ve always hated asparagus, but now that you despise pizza, don’t you think your taste buds have changed enough to perhaps enjoy asparagus? If not, keep trying new foods until you find something you can stomach. Even if you feel you’re eating enough healthy foods, you may still need something more. Thankfully, there are many calorie- and nutrient-rich drinks available that help when you’re in need of a boost. So if you need to consume more calories, talk with your physician about the best option for you.
